Somerset West's estate homes tend to have a lot of glass and more than a few blinds, awnings and exterior shades to manage. Motorisation isn't a gadget here so much as the practical answer: sun sensors drop shading automatically on whichever elevation is running hot, wind sensors retract the awning and any exterior screens before the south-easter picks up, and one app controls the lot from the couch, the office, or a chair on the patio.

Rechargeable battery motors are the retrofit default — no chasing walls, no visible wiring, just a periodic charge. Wired 220V motors suit new builds and renovations, and are the standard choice for the bigger, heavier exterior systems.

When it's essentially required

Spans too wide or heavy for a chain, blinds over stair voids or double-volume glass, concealed ceiling-recess systems, and every exterior product — external venetians, roller shutters, awnings, zip screens — are all cases where motorisation stops being an upsell and starts being the only practical option. On a multi-blind wall of glass, "one button, six blinds" is the whole pitch.
